The Wonder of AWE
I often ask myself, “How can I get more time in my life?” I discovered the answer to my question. I am to create opportunities for awe, or a meaningful/spiritual practice.
I experienced awe a couple of weeks ago when the kids and I treated ourselves to the Broadway show, “The Lion King.” I was completely enthralled and in a state of wonder and amazement. Time was elongated and I was filled with a sense of peace, lightheartedness and joy, lingering for hours after.
I also experienced awe during my marathons and half marathons as I was a part of a much larger crowd pursuing the finish line.
Awe is a distinct and powerful emotion that includes perceptual vastness and the need to alter assumptions about the world, events, people, nature and God. (Keltner and Haidt 2003)
That same weekend, I learned the science behind awe. It was perfect timing! I can experience awe when taking the scenic route, going outside, turning my gaze upward, getting inspired, seeing a phenomenal performance and immersing myself in a crowd! All confirming my recent experiences. It is also proven that awe elongates time and makes it feel drawn out.
This is another simple practice with tremendous benefit for my heart and soul, to help me flourish and thrive.
For Yahweh, the Most High, is awe-inspiring, a great King over all the earth. Psalm 47:2
